Hyperscale & AI Growth

Italy is emerging as a key destination for international hyperscale investment, driven by rising cloud adoption, AI workloads, and strategic connectivity. Global hyperscalers are expanding their presence in the market, with AWS planning to invest €1.2 billion through 2029 to scale its cloud infrastructure, while Microsoft has committed to training 1 million people in Italy in AI skills by the end of 2025.

As the 2030 target for carbon-neutral European data centers approaches, Italy’s data center industry is strengthening its commitment to sustainability. Significant investments in renewable energy, heat recovery for district heating, and advanced cooling technologies are playing a key role in advancing toward net-zero carbon emissions. Currently, 30% of commercial data centers in Italy are already powered by renewable sources.

Strategic Connectivity

Italy’s position at the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa provides fast, low-latency connectivity and direct access to an extensive network of subsea and terrestrial fibre-optic cables. The 8760km Medusa submarine cable system, just one of many, connects Italy with counties such as France, Portugal, Spain and North Africa, landing in nations such as Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia.

Zoning & Regulation

The lack of a unified framework for data center infrastructure has created challenges for regional and national authorities, sometimes contributing to delays in the development of new projects. In response, the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT) has published the updated version of the “National Strategy for Attracting Foreign Investment in Data Center”, designed to streamline authorisation procedures and support more efficient construction of data centers.
